New Poll Reveals Concerning Numbers for Biden Regarding Age
A Majority of Voters Believe President Joe Biden is Too Old for Another Term, Poll Finds
A recent poll conducted by The Wall Street Journal revealed that a significant majority of voters believe President Joe Biden is too old to run for another term in the White House. According to the survey, 73% of voters, including two-thirds of Democrats, view Biden, who is 80 years old, as being too old for the presidency. These findings align closely with a recent Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll.
The poll also asked voters about former President Donald Trump, who is also running for a second term as the GOP frontrunner at the age of 77. Forty-seven percent of voters expressed the belief that Trump is too old.
Seeking Change
Democratic pollster Michael Bocian, who conducted the survey alongside Republican colleague Tony Fabrizio, emphasized that voters are seeking change and neither Biden nor Trump represents the change they desire. Bocian’s statement reflects the sentiment that the leading candidates do not meet the expectations of the electorate.
Concerns about Biden’s Age and Ability to Lead
Biden, already the oldest person to hold the presidency, would be 86 years old at the end of a potential second term. Concerns about his age have been fueled by instances where he has lost his train of thought while speaking and moments caught on camera where he has tripped or fallen over. These incidents have raised doubts about his ability to effectively lead the nation.
Other surveys conducted this year have also indicated a growing concern about Biden’s fitness to serve as commander-in-chief, despite his dominance in national primary polls for the Democratic Party.
Age as a Contested Issue
In public appearances, Biden and his Democratic allies in Congress have attempted to downplay concerns about the president’s age. However, the issue continues to persist amidst rampant speculation about potential candidates who might enter the race if Biden decides not to run for re-election.
Even Hillary Clinton, a former presidential contender herself, acknowledged the significance of Biden’s age, stating, “His age is an issue, and people have every right to consider it.”
Poll Findings and Public Perception
The Wall Street Journal survey, which polled 1,500 registered voters, revealed that 36% of respondents believe Biden is mentally fit for the presidency, compared to 46% for Trump. Biden scored higher on likability and honesty, while Trump performed better in terms of accomplishments and a vision for the future.
Furthermore, the survey indicated that only 39% of voters hold a favorable view of Biden, while 42% approve of his job performance and 57% disapprove. In a hypothetical general election rematch, both Biden and Trump received 46% support.
