Another nation prohibits ‘Barbie’ due to ‘harmful values’.
The Controversial Ban on the “Barbie” Movie in Algeria
The highly anticipated “Barbie” movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has recently faced a major setback in Algeria. After its successful opening three weeks ago, the film has been abruptly banned by the country’s Ministry of Culture and Arts, citing concerns over its “damaging morals” and alleged promotion of “homosexuality.”

The decision to pull the movie from theaters came after the government received complaints about its alleged violation of Algeria’s religious and cultural beliefs. The film was accused of promoting homosexuality, which goes against the country’s values.
The local distributor MD Ciné and leading cinemas were informed by the government about the ban, citing concerns over “damaging morals,” as reported by the private news site 24H Algérie.
This ban follows similar actions taken by Kuwait and Lebanon, who also prohibited the screening of “Barbie” due to concerns about its alleged promotion of homosexuality. Kuwait’s film censorship committee chairman, Lafi Al-Subaie, criticized the movie for carrying ideas that encourage unacceptable behavior and distort society’s values.
Lebanon’s cultural minister, Mohammad Mortada, expressed concerns about the film’s promotion of homosexuality and sexual transformation, which he believed contradicted the values of faith and morality. The film is currently under review by Lebanon’s censorship committee, with expectations of a potential ban.
While Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were reportedly considering a ban, the film was released in those countries on August 10. However, it remains unclear if any edits were made to comply with censorship requests.
Earlier, the film faced a ban in Vietnam due to its depiction of a South China Sea map, which was deemed offensive by government officials. The disputed region has been a source of tension between Vietnam and China, and the movie’s inclusion of a U-shaped “nine-dash line” in the map sparked controversy.
Despite the controversy and bans, the “Barbie” movie continues to generate buzz and spark discussions about artistic freedom, cultural values, and LGBTQ+ representation.
