Anna Giaritelli says police response after attack left her ‘infuriated’
The article discusses Washington Examiner homeland security reporter Anna Giaritelli’s experience following a violent assault she endured in 2020 outside Union Station in Washington, D.C. During the attack, a homeless man lunged at her, leading to a struggle and a daylight sexual assault. Although the attacker was arrested months later, the Metropolitan Police Department’s online crime statistics omitted his arrest, a fact Giaritelli described as the city “gaslighting” her. She expressed frustration and disappointment with the police response and the lack of support from the city, wich eventually led her to move away. The article also notes that under former President Donald Trump’s invocation of federal control over the D.C. Metropolitan police Department and deployment of the National Guard, crime rates in the district have fallen significantly, with marked decreases in robberies, assaults, vehicle thefts, carjackings, and violent crime overall.
Anna Giaritelli says police response after attack left her ‘infuriated’
The Washington Examiner’s homeland security reporter, Anna Giaritelli, appeared on the Sean Hannity Show Wednesday to recount the aftermath of the attack against her.
In 2020, Giaritelli suffered a random attack outside of Union Station. A homeless man lunged at her, which prompted a struggle where she was sexually assaulted in broad daylight.
Months after the attack, he was arrested. However, the Metropolitan Police Department’s “Crime Cards” online statistics page omits this man. Giaritelli described how she felt about the District of Columbia “gaslighting” her.
“It was infuriating, and you know after that type of crime, you’re not in your right mind,” Giaritelli said “Trying to overcome that and then trying to understand at the same time that your city is gaslighting you. ‘It’s not a big deal, we’re going to try him by the Feds.’ It’s a big deal but it’s also not a big deal.”
Giaritelli eventually moved away from the district.
“At the end of the day, I can’t rely on the city to have my back,” Giaritelli said. “I felt physically unsafe but I felt so let down by the city that I loved.”
