Angel Studios ‘DAVID’ opens to studio’s best box office weekend

Angel Studios is closing the year out with another win under its belt, achieving new records with the release of its latest film, DAVID.

The animated musical, based on the biblical story of King David, opened to $22 million over the weekend, marking the studio’s biggest opening weekend. Sound of Freedom, which placed Angel Studios on the Hollywood map, was the previous holder of this record, opening on July 4, 2023, and grossing $19 million in its first three-day weekend.

DAVID also outgrossed fellow competing family film The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants in its opening weekend, with the latter film opening to $16 million.

“Families are searching for values-driven films that honor hope, and our Angel Guild members embraced DAVID from the very beginning. We greatly value the support of our outstanding exhibitors and look forward to a robust, extended theatrical run as this popular animated musical continues to warm hearts and inspire families this Christmas,” said Angel Studios Head of Theatrical Brandon Purdie in a news release.

DAVID achieved another record as the biggest opening weekend for an animated faith-based film, surpassing fellow Angel Studios movie The King of Kings, released on April 11. The film detailing the story of Jesus Christ was released on Palm Sunday weekend and was also screened at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Like The King of Kings, DAVID received mostly positive reviews from critics and very positive feedback from viewers, scoring a 98% approval rating from moviegoers on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade from CinemaScore.

Next year, Angel Studios will release Young Washington, a film exploring former President George Washington’s involvement in the French and Indian War. The film is set to premiere on July 3, 2026, a day before the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary.
