‘An Unthinkable Tragedy’: DeSantis Offers Support To States Hit By Deadly Tornadoes

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) offered support to several states recently hit by a series of deadly tornadoes.

Over the weekend, dozens of tornadoes were reported throughout Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. The largest tornado that struck the region tore through over 200 miles of Kentucky; as of Tuesday, 74 people have been confirmed dead and more than 100 remain unaccounted for.

On Tuesday, a press release from DeSantis’ office said that Florida “stands ready to aid the response efforts from all impacted states.” The Florida Division of Emergency Management coordinated with offices “of the nine affected states to identify resource gaps and offer support as needed” — including urban search and rescue teams, ambulance strike teams, and recovery disaster specialists to deploy.

“The devastation left in the wake of the tornado outbreak over the weekend is an unthinkable tragedy, and Casey and I are keeping the victims and all impacted individuals in our prayers as initial recovery efforts begin,” said DeSantis in the press release, referencing his wife. “The State of Florida has been communicating with our partners in the impacted states since early Saturday morning and we stand ready to provide any assistance needed during this time. We’ll continue to work with them to ensure they have the resources they need to respond.”

“The Division is keeping the victims of the tornado outbreak at the forefront of our thoughts and prayers,” added FDEM Director Kevin Guthrie. “The impacted states have provided support to Florida in previous disasters, and we will not hesitate to return the favor. The destruction reported so far is catastrophic and the Division will continue to work closely with our emergency management counterparts as they respond to this disaster.”

The White House has also been working to ensure that state and local governments have sufficient resources to recuperate from the damage.

“We have been working around the clock through the weekend closely with governors of impacted states and local leaders to ensure they have everything they need to respond to and recover from this unimaginable tragedy,” said White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

President Biden plans to visit Kentucky on Wednesday.

“I’ll be happy to come, but I don’t want to be in the way,” Biden said he told Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY). “When a President shows up, he shows up with an awful lot of personnel, an awful lot of vehicles, an awful lot of — we can — we can get in the way unintentionally.”

“And so, what I’m working with the governor of Kentucky and others who may want me to be there is I made — make sure that we are value added at the time, and we’re not going to get in the way of the rescue and recovery.  But I will pla- — I do plan on going,” Biden added.

One report from catastrophe modeling firm Karen Clark & Company indicates that insured losses may total $3 billion; meanwhile, credit rating agency Fitch said that costs could rise to $5 billion.
