‘American Idiot’ Pledges To Renounce US Citizenship Over Dobbs Decision

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong told British concertgoers Friday he plans to renounce his U.S. citizenship after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

“Fuck America, I’m fucking renouncing my citizenship,” the 50-year-old punk rocker said to the thousands crowded into London Stadium. “There’s too much fucking stupid in the world to go back to that miserable fucking excuse for a country.” Armstrong later assured the audience he wasn’t kidding. “Oh I’m not kidding,” he said. “You’re going to get a lot from me in the coming days.”

Armstrong has sharply criticized the United States for decades while retaining his citizenship. In 2004, American Idiot was one of Green Day’s hit albums, and Armstrong led chants at a concert in 2016, calling the nation “fascist” under president-elect Donald Trump. He has donated thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates, including failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and former president Barack Obama.

Other musicians attacked the Supreme Court in the wake of the Dobbs decision, such as Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar. The latter performed a pro-abortion chant at the Glastonbury music festival while dressed in a crown of thorns and covered in fake blood.
