American Christian Nurse and Her Daughter Freed After Being Kidnapped in Haiti
American nurse Alix Dorsainvil and her daughter were finally freed on Wednesday, nearly two weeks after they were kidnapped in Haiti’s capital, according to the aid organization El Roi Haiti.
“There is still much to process and to heal from in this situation,” the Christian group founded by Dorsainvil’s husband stated, requesting that neither she nor her family be contacted.
The group expressed immense joy and gratitude upon confirming the safe release of Dorsainvil and her daughter.
No further details have been provided at this time, including whether a ransom was paid.
Witnesses reported that armed men abducted the New Hampshire native and her young daughter from a clinic in a gang-controlled area of Port-au-Prince, where Dorsainvil works.
The Christian group has been providing essential services such as medical care and education to the impoverished communities in Haiti.
Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, gang warfare has been on the rise in Haiti, with gang members resorting to violence, including killings, rapes, and kidnappings for ransom.
A local nonprofit organization has documented a significant increase in kidnappings, with 539 cases reported since January.
In a heartfelt video posted on the El Roi Haiti website, Dorsainvil describes the Haitian people as “full of joy, and life and love,” expressing her gratitude for having the opportunity to know them.
According to a blog post by El Roi Haiti, Dorsainvil fell in love with the people of Haiti during a visit after the devastating 2010 earthquake that struck the nation.
Dorsainvil is a graduate of Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts, where she participated in a nursing education program focused on supporting Haiti.
