Amazon Prime unveils new faith-based subscription series

Amazon Prime announced a collaboration Tuesday with a faith-based studio to stream its biblical stories.

The Wonder Project will release over 1,000 hours of content to the Prime Video service for a price of $8.99 a month. Earlier this year, the studio, which, according to Wonder Project CEO Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten, has the goal of “restoring faith in things worth believing in,” streamed its eight-episode series called House of David. The first season depicts the early life of the biblical figure David, with a series finale centered on David’s fight with the giant Goliath.

The series receives over 40 million views across 240 countries and territories, according to Amazon Prime. This placed the series in the top 10 new series debuts in the U.S. in particular and was at one point No. 1 on Prime Video in the United States as well. The second season, set to stream this fall, will be exclusively available to Wonder Project subscribers.

“We are blown away by the success of House of David and can’t wait for audiences to be swept away into the epic action and drama of season 2,” Wonder Project founder Jon Erwin said in a statement. “Our audience is underserved and craves a destination they can trust with exceptional originals and curated movies and TV shows. With the new Wonder Project subscription on Prime Video, we will be delivering all of that and more.”

Future releases will include movies titled Sarah’s Oil, Flyer, and The Breadwinner, which is starring comedians Nate Bargatze, Will Forte, Colin Jost, and Kumail Nanjiani. Another film, Young Washington, will also be released in a partnership with Angel Studios, the Utah-based company behind the series The Chosen and the film The Sound of Freedom.

“This exciting addition to our service reflects our commitment to providing diverse, meaningful content that resonates with our customers,” Head of Prime Video Marketplace Ryan Pirozzi said in the release. “This launch represents another step in our ongoing efforts to ensure Prime Video offers something for everyone, and we look forward to seeing how this new offering enriches the viewing experience for our customers.”

The Wonder Project will notify viewers when its content is available to stream if they join an email list from their website. This studio’s next release will be Sarah’s Oil on Nov. 7.
