Police apprehended the alleged gunman suspected of shooting the driver who plowed into a crowd with his vehicle in Los Angeles, California, last month.
The arrest took place around 1:15 p.m. local time Sunday in Redondo Beach, Los Angeles County, two days after law enforcement identified the gunman as Efrain Villalobos, 28, and released photos of him to the public.
Authorities warned Villalobos was considered armed and dangerous. He faces felony charges in connection with the shooting, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
“Villalobos was booked for Attempt Murder and has no bail,” the LAPD said in a statement Monday morning. “The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.”
Villalobos allegedly shot Fernando Ramirez, 29, in the back after the latter drove through a large crowd, injuring 37 people. No fatalities resulted from the July 19 car attack.
Ramirez faces 74 charges, including 37 counts of attempted murder and 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, with his vehicle being the deadly weapon. The 37 counts are for each wounded victim. If convicted, he faces multiple life sentences in state prison.
The charges were brought by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, a former federal prosecutor and previously registered Republican.
Authorities believe anger and alcohol were possible motivating factors in the car attack, as Ramirez was kicked out of a nightclub moments before the incident.
