Alina Habba withdraws accusation against Carroll’s lawyer over impropriety

Former President Trump’s Lawyer Backtracks on Conflict of ‍Interest Concerns in E. Jean Carroll Defamation Cases

Alina Habba, the‍ lawyer representing former President Donald Trump in the E. ‌Jean‍ Carroll ‌defamation cases, has ⁤had a change of‌ heart after facing the⁣ threat of sanctions from Carroll’s lead attorney. Carroll, an ‍advice columnist,⁣ has successfully won two civil defamation cases against ‍Trump, who repeatedly denied sexually assaulting‌ her in the mid-1990s.

Last week, a jury ⁤ordered Trump to pay a staggering $83 million ⁣in damages‌ for publicly denying Carroll’s allegations in 2019.

On Monday, Habba raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest between‍ U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan⁢ and Carroll’s lead ‍attorney, ‍Roberta Kaplan. Habba cited a New York Post report that claimed the judge‌ had‌ served as the lawyer’s mentor in the ‍early 1990s. ‌However, Roberta⁢ Kaplan swiftly dismissed the allegation as‍ baseless and stated that she ⁣had‌ no⁣ recollection of any interaction with ⁢Lewis Kaplan during their time at the ⁢same law firm.

In ‌response‍ to Habba’s letter, Carroll’s lawyer ‌threatened sanctions. However, Habba ⁤clarified in⁢ her response ‍to Kaplan that she was simply seeking information about the potential connection between the judge and ⁣the lawyer and that her initial letter did not ‍contain any allegations. Habba concluded ⁤her⁢ letter ‌by stating that the matter⁤ had seemingly been resolved.

Trump has vowed to ⁢appeal⁣ both defamation cases, including the recent verdict that ordered him to pay $83 million in damages. In a separate defamation case, Trump was ⁤ordered‌ to pay $7.3 million in compensatory damages, ‌$11 million for reputational repair, and $65‌ million⁤ in ⁣punitive ‌damages, totaling $83.3 million.
