Alabama Library Reverses Decision, Restores Kirk Cameron and Riley Gaines’ Faith-Filled Story Hour Event.
An Alabama Public Library Reverses Decision to Cancel Moms for Liberty Book Reading Event
An Alabama public library has reversed its decision to cancel a Moms for Liberty book reading event featuring actor Kirk Cameron and women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines. The event, organized by publishing company Brave Books, is part of a “See You at the Library” national tour taking place in nearly 300 libraries across 45 states.
The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library System initially canceled the event due to concerns about security and capacity. However, after facing backlash and receiving a letter from law firm First Liberty Institute, the library system decided to allow the event to proceed.
Brave Books CEO Trent Talbot expressed his happiness at the library’s change of heart, stating, “We must stand our ground and fight for our public institutions. The foe we fail to meet at the gate in our own generation is the foe we let into the city for the next.”
The event had faced opposition from protesters who threatened to crash the event. As the number of interested attendees grew, the library offered additional space, but the organizers declined and suggested holding the event outside. However, due to confirmed threats of protests, local law enforcement advised moving the event to a private location. Despite this, Brave Books insisted on holding the event in a public space.
Brave Books immediately challenged the decision to cancel the event, and law firm First Liberty Institute sent a letter to the library system, stating it was prepared to take legal action to protect their client’s civil rights.
The Moms for Liberty organizers, Emily Jones and Elizabeth Stewart, expressed their disagreement with how the library system and the Madison City Police Department handled the safety concerns. Jones, the organization’s Madison County chapter chair, criticized the police chief’s directive, stating, “To me, that just indicates that he is not interested in making this event go well. He wants it to go away.”
A National Tour to Provide an Alternative to Controversial Drag Queen Story Hours
The event, led by Kirk Cameron, star of the 1980s sitcom “Growing Pains,” aims to provide conservative Christian families with an alternative to the controversial drag queen story hours that target children. Initially, Cameron and Gaines were not scheduled to appear at the Madison County event, but their planned attendance was announced later, generating more attention and excitement.
