Alabama’s request for a pause on the congressional map ruling, due to Voting Rights Act violations, was denied.
Alabama Loses Court Battle Over Congressional Map
Alabama suffered a significant setback on Monday as a court ruling struck down the Republicans’ latest congressional map, citing alleged violations of the Voting Rights Act.
Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen recently appealed to the Supreme Court after a federal district court rejected lawmakers’ attempt to create a congressional map without a second majority-black district.

The Supreme Court had previously ruled against the state on the same issue. However, lawmakers argue that the ruling did not explicitly require them to include a second majority-black district in order to comply with the court’s decision.
A three-judge panel stated on Monday, “it is exceptionally unusual for a litigant who has presented his arguments to the Supreme Court once already — and lost — to assert that he is now ‘overwhelmingly likely’ to prevail on those same arguments in that Court in this case.”
