AFP Questions Kensington Palace Credibility Following Princess Kate Photo Controversy
A Shift in Trust: AFP Reassesses Kensington Palace After Photo Scandal
In a stunning turn of events, Kensington Palace has found itself under the scanner of global news giant Agence France-Presse (AFP) for potentially compromised photo integrity. The recent Kate Middleton photo scandal has not just dominated the tabloids but has also shaken the confidence of one of the largest news agencies in their royal sources.
Phil Chetwynd, AFP’s global news director, candidly expressed the agency’s heightened caution on BBC Radio 4’s Media Show. As per Deadline, AFP will now subject Kensington Palace to meticulous scrutiny, especially when handling future photo submissions from the high-profile family.
Media Trust in the Balance
Doubts were aired bluntly when “Media Show” host Ros Atkins queried if Kensington Palace could still be a trusted source. Chetwynd’s response was unequivocal: “No, absolutely not. Like with anything, when you’re let down by a source, the bar is raised…We sent out notes to all our teams at the moment to be absolutely super more vigilant about the content coming across our desk — even from what we would call trusted sources.”
Detailing how extraordinary the situation is, Chetwynd compared the retraction of the Middleton photo to scenarios involving authoritarian states like Iran or North Korea. The heavily edited Mother’s Day photo was flagged so seriously that both AP and Reuters dispatched “kill” notices urgently.
Chetwynd emphasized the core value of journalistic integrity, “One thing that’s really important is you cannot be distorting reality for the public,” he stated, highlighting the issue of trust erosion between the public, institutions, and media. “A photo must broadly represent reality as it was captured,” he added.
Amidst her convalescence following abdominal surgery in January, Kate Middleton’s absence has been conspicuous, causing rumors and conspiracy theories to swirl around her prolonged break from royal engagements until Easter. Kensington Palace did little to quell the storm with their questionable snap.

Amidst all the speculation about Kate’s whereabouts, fans have even cast doubt on recent images of the Duchess, speculating if they too were altered. Notably, British newspapers side-stepped publishing a photo of her with her mother.
Hopes lingered for a glimpse of normalcy until the last sighting of the Princess of Wales at Christmas.
The X account from Kensington Palace issued a curt apology regarding the photo fiasco, stopping short of unveiling the original image. “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” the statement read, ending with a brief note signed “C” and wishes for a happy Mother’s Day.
