Matthew Perry, beloved for his iconic role as Chandler in the hit show “Friends,” tragically passed away at the age of 54.
Captain Scot Williams of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide division announced the tragic news on Saturday, stating that the cause of death will not be determined for some time, but there is no evidence of foul play.
According to media reports, Perry was discovered lifeless in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home.
Warner Bros. Television Group released a heartfelt statement following the devastating news, expressing their condolences to Perry’s loved ones.
“Matthew was an incredibly talented actor and an integral part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family,” the company said. “His comedic genius touched the hearts of people all over the world, and his legacy will forever live on. This is a day filled with sorrow, and we send our love to his family, loved ones, and devoted fans.”
Perry openly shared his battle with alcohol and drug addiction in his memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” published in 2022. He revealed that he had his first drink at the age of 14, but only realized the signs of alcoholism when he turned 21.
The book begins with his public struggle with addiction, stating, “Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My buddies refer to me as Matty. And I’m supposed to be dead.”
He disclosed that he had spent over $7 million on his journey to sobriety, including multiple stints in rehab. His substance abuse also led to severe health issues, such as a five-month hospitalization in 2018 due to a colon rupture, where he had a mere 2% chance of surviving the night.
Perry’s portrayal of Chandler on “Friends” made him one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars, as he played a pivotal role in the beloved group of friends in New York alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, and David Schwimmer.
“Friends” aired from 1994 to 2004 and won the Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series in 2002.
Friends, family, and Perry’s co-stars shared their heartfelt condolences and cherished memories of him on social media.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to share his childhood memories with Perry.
“Matthew Perry’s passing is shocking and saddening,” Trudeau wrote. “I’ll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play, and I know people around the world are never going to forget the joy he brought them. Thanks for all the laughs, Matthew. You were loved — and you will be missed.”
