During his last interview before disappearing in mid-January, Julian Sands, the renowned actor, gave a chilling insight into his own mortality while hiking in the treacherous mountains near Los Angeles.

The 65-year-old actor, an experienced climber, went missing on January 13 after informing his loved ones that he would be scaling Mt. Baldy in Southern California. Last week, his worst fears were confirmed when human remains discovered in the area were positively identified as his.

In his final interview published in the latest issue of the U.K.’s Radio Times, Sands described climbing as a life-affirming challenge. He referred to it as “solace and a sort of existentialist self-negation, but equally a self-affirmation,” adding, “If you can conquer dangerous mountains, you can certainly conquer life as an actor — the two are remarkably complementary.”

Sands went on to reveal that some of his friends had abandoned mountaineering over the years. Some blamed climate change for the increasingly treacherous terrain, while others cited the challenges that come with age. Sands explained, “If you lack the desire and commitment to climb a route, it becomes much more dangerous and a deflating experience.”

The actor, known for his role in “Room With a View,” concluded by acknowledging that every time he embarked on a climbing expedition, he was venturing into a potentially life-threatening adventure.

Confronting the Supernatural

Sands shared his encounters with eerie phenomena while climbing mountains. He described finding human remains and the chilling realization that he was in a place where many lives had been lost. He said, “It’s not necessarily supernatural, it’s possibly all too natural — what I would call hypernatural. You’re in the presence of immense nature and its power is revealed. It can transport us into a realm of natural forces beyond our usual sensitivity.”
