Police are responding to a reported active shooter at the University of South Carolina‘s main campus in Columbia.
The school said there was no evidence of an an active shooter as of 7:30 p.m., though police are still searching “affected buildings.”
“Please continue to shelter in place until there is an all clear. Avoid the area. Evacuate the area or seek safe shelter and barricade yourself in a safe area as necessary until further notice,” the alert said.
The school had previously sent out an emergency alert just after 6:30 p.m. that said an active shooter, identified as a “6ft white male with black pants,” was reported at the Thomas Cooper Library, the main library on campus.
Classes for students at the university began last Tuesday.
