Mexican gangsters commit car bomb attack, killing police officers.
Suspected Gang Members Kill Security Officials and Civilians in Mexico
Suspected gang members in western Mexico carried out a devastating attack on Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of four security officials and two civilians. The incident, described by the local government as an “act of terror,” involved the use of explosives.
The blast targeted police and officials working at the Jalisco state attorney general’s office. State governor Enrique Alfaro took to Twitter to express his shock, stating that this was an unprecedented act that showcased the dangerous capabilities of organized crime groups.
Increase in Casualties
During a press conference on Wednesday, Governor Alfaro revealed that the death toll had risen from three to six overnight. Additionally, twelve people were injured in the explosion, which occurred in the municipality of Tlajomulco, south of the state capital Guadalajara.
A Cunning Trap
According to Governor Alfaro, the explosion was the result of a trap set by the perpetrators. They had phoned in an anonymous tip, claiming that human remains were buried at the scene. “This call was made to lure our police there and subject them to this attack with explosive devices,” he explained.
Alfaro condemned the incident as an “act of terror,” emphasizing that organized crime was attempting to spread fear and panic.
Victims and Ongoing Violence
A spokesperson for the Jalisco government confirmed that three of the deceased individuals worked at the attorney general’s office, while one was a local police officer and two were civilians. The state of Jalisco and its neighboring communities have been grappling with gang violence, posing a significant challenge to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s administration.
This attack follows a similar incident in the neighboring state of Guanajuato, where security forces investigating a phone tip about bodies in a car were met with an explosion. One member of Mexico’s National Guard lost their life, and at least three others were injured. Deputy security minister Luis Rodriguez Bucio referred to this incident as a “car bomb.”
