Tebow Time? Former QB Works Out With NFL Team, Eyes Return As Tight End

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, former Heisman trophy winner and first-round draft pick Tim Tebow worked out with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a tight end.

Update on a former first-round pick: Tim Tebow recently worked out for the #Jaguars, source said, and there has been at least some discussion of him signing. Oh, and he’s a tight end now.

Tebow reportedly reached out to the Jaguars and requested the tryout with Jacksonville. Urban Meyer, Tebow’s head coach while in college at The University of Florida, is entering his first year as head coach of the Jaguars.

In a February podcast with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tebow was asked if he would be involved with Jacksonville’s new regime. 

“I’ll be honest, we’ve always talked pretty regularly, even when he’s been far off in Ohio,” Tebow told Schefter. “He’s on the board of my foundation. He’s heavily involved. He’s helping us raise money this fall to rescue girls out of trafficking. We talk quite often. I’m excited about this opportunity for him, for his family, his daughters, his son Nate, Miss Shelley. I think they’re really excited as a family.

“I don’t think they’re going to be living too far from me. I know they’ll have good neighbors, and I just wonder if he’s not going to cut his yard or not. … There’s no chance. You know that he is not cutting his yard.”

In recent years, Tebow tried his hand at baseball, spending time in the Mets organization and as an Eastern League All-Star while playing for Double-A Binghamton in 2018. Tebow announced his retirement from baseball this past February. 

“I loved every minute of the journey, but at this time I feel called in other directions,” Tebow said in a statement. “I never want to be partially in on anything. I always want to be 100 percent in on whatever I choose. Thank you again for everyone’s support of this awesome journey in baseball, I’ll always cherish my time as a Met.”

Baseball was never the only thing on Tebow’s mind as he continued his work for ESPN and the SEC Network as a college football analyst. 

Tebow’s return to football would be a return to “Tebowmania,” driven by his wildly enthusiastic fanbase. 

Tebow was a first round draft pick of the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL Draft, and went on to lead the Broncos to a playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011. When Tebow entered the league, running quarterbacks were not rated as highly as they are today, and his lack of accuracy was a huge point of contention throughout the league. He was traded to the New York Jets in 2012 where he primarily played in the ‘wildcat” formation. He was out of the league after the 2012 season. 

Tebow’s presence in Jacksonville would certainly boost ticket sales and bring attention to Meyer’s first year as an NFL head coach. Whether he’ll be able to contribute — or if he’ll even be signed to the roster — remains to be seen.
