NATO jets scramble to Ukraine-Romania border in response to Russian drone attack

Two German fighter jets were sent to the Ukraine-Romania border Tuesday night following a wave of drone strikes from Russia.

Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa province in Ukraine, said drones hit infrastructure and production facilities in the city of Izmail, which is situated on the Danube River at the border with Romania, a NATO member.

Ukrainian air force officials said Russia launched 93 drones and two ballistic missiles overnight, noting 62 of the drones and one missile were shot down or suppressed.

The German air force Typhoon fighters were sent to the area “to monitor the air situation in the border area with Ukraine, in the north of Tulcea County,” Romania’s defense ministry posted to social media.

The ministry noted that “during the mission, there were no penetrations of aircraft in the national airspace” and that the German jets returned safely.

In previous airstrikes, Russian planes have entered NATO airspace. Poland, another NATO member, has also reported several violations of its airspace from Russian missiles and drones, accusing Russia on Wednesday of “provocation” after a Russian drone crashed in eastern Poland.

The German aircraft are deployed to Romania as part of NATO’s “Enhanced Air Policing” mission, which began along the eastern border of NATO countries after Russia took Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine in 2014. The Italian air force was previously deployed to Romania for the Enhanced Air Policing mission.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the overnight strikes “only confirm the need to pressure Moscow, the need to impose new sanctions and tariffs until diplomacy works fully.”
