Police Union Chairman blames DC crime problem on ‘bad legislation’ from city council

The chairman of the DC Police Union, greggory Pemberton, blamed the rising crime in Washington, D.C., on “bad legislation” passed by what he called “radical activists” on the city council. Speaking on Fox News, Pemberton agreed with President Donald Trump’s assertion that the crime situation is out of control and needs urgent action but disagreed that the primary cause was the city’s recent no-cash bail system. Instead, he pointed to multiple legislative actions by the city council that, according to him, have weakened public safety and deteriorated the criminal justice system. Following Trump’s proclamation that the National Guard would be deployed for at least 30 days to assist local law enforcement in combatting crime, Ward 6 Councilman Charles Allen criticized the move on social media, calling it “extreme, outrageous, and dangerous.” The DC Police Union responded by blaming Allen and the council for the surge in crime. The White House highlighted statistics showing D.C. has the fourth-highest homicide rate in the country, with a murder rate of 27.3 per 100,000 residents.

Police Union Chairman blames DC crime problem on ‘bad legislation’ from city council

DC Police Union Chairman Greggory Pemberton laid the blame for the crime in Washington, D.C., on the “radical activists” on the city council.

President Donald Trump announced Monday he would be deploying the National Guard to the capital to assist law enforcement in combating crime. These guardsmen will remain in D.C. for at least 30 days.

Pemberton appeared on Fox News’s America Reports Monday to “completely agree with the president that the crime in the District of Columbia is out of control and something needs to be done.” However, when it came to the source of the problem, which Trump claimed was a transition to a no-cash bail system, Pemberton disagreed.

“[Trump is] right that no cash bail is part of the problem, but it is a minute part of the problem. The city council has passed so much legislation that’s terrible for public safety,” Pemberton said.

“Every piece of legislation that the city council has passed as it applies to public safety has only deteriorated the system. Every aspect of our criminal justice system in D.C. is broken, and every aspect that’s broken can be traced back to bad legislation that has been passed by radical activists on the city council.”

When Ward 6 Councilman Charles Allen took to X after Trump’s announcement to call the deployment “extreme, outrageous, and dangerous,” the DC Police Union responded.

“Very brave of you to post this since it is entirely your fault,” the union’s X account said.

The White House went on to issue statistics on crime, writing in a statement that the murder rate was 27.3 per 100,000 residents, giving D.C. the fourth-highest homicide rate in the country.
