Active shooter reported at Emory University in Georgia

An active shooter incident was reported on Friday at Emory University’s Atlanta campus in Georgia. The university’s Office of Critical Event preparedness and Response issued a warning just after 5:30 p.m.Eastern time, urging people to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT,” avoid the area, and shelter in place. The shooter was reported near a local CVS store. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), located less than a mile away, also sent out an alert instructing employees to take shelter. The FBI deployed agents to assist wiht the situation. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp thanked first responders for their quick action and noted that this was the second mass shooting in the state that week, with a previous incident at an Army base. He expressed gratitude for those protecting Georgians and asked the public to keep the victims and responders in their prayers.

An active shooter was reported at Emory University’s Atlanta campus in Georgia on Friday.

Emory University’s Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response sent a message warning of an active shooter just after 5:30 p.m. Eastern time.

“RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Avoid the area. Shelter in place,” the alert said, identifying the shooter as near the local CVS.

Notably, the university is less than a mile from the Centers for Disease Control headquarters. The CDC sent out its own alert asking employees to take shelter.

The FBI sent agents to assist with the response.

Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) thanked the first responders who rushed to the scene. He noted that it was the second mass shooting that week in Georgia, the previous one targeting an Army base.

“Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians. Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are,” he said.

Kemp added that he and his family “are thankful for all those who answer the call to serve and who protect their fellow Georgians. We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center.”
