Charlamagne tha God says Trump is using ‘authoritarian strategy’ in social media slam

Radio host Charlamagne tha God said Monday that President Donald Trump is using an “authoritarian strategy” to oppose his critics as he feuds with media personalities and outlets.

Trump criticized Charlamagne on Truth Social on Sunday, calling him a “racist sleazebag” who doesn’t know the president’s accomplishments. Charlamagne appeared Saturday on My View with Lara Trump, during which he said “traditional conservatives” could retake the Republican Party from Trump in the wake of his suspected connection with Jeffrey Epstein.

On Monday, Charlemagne appeared to dismiss Trump’s dig at first, saying, “That’s his opinion” on The Stephen A. Smith Show. However, he said his phone is “blowing up” from people telling him to make sure his security is up-to-date following Trump’s statement.

“And it just made me think to myself, ‘Damn, we’re at that point in our society where you can’t even criticize your president without people thinking that your safety is in danger?’ If that’s not an authoritarian strategy, I don’t know what is,” Charlamagne said Monday.

“So just the fact people were calling my phone saying that today, it says a lot about where we are as a society, so I don’t know what’s going to happen to me,” Charlamagne said.

Charlamagne told Lara Trump on Saturday that he thinks comedian Jon Stewart could run for president in 2028, adding that fellow late-night host Stephen Colbert could be Stewart’s running mate. Charlamagne said Monday that Stewart is “a person who speaks truth to power,” dismissing the possibility that the comedian’s Jewish identity would be a detriment amid the Gaza conflict.

Stephen A. Smith said he is a fan of Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), as rumors suggest the governor will be a 2028 presidential candidate. Charlemagne agreed, but said Shapiro could face more pushback for being Jewish compared to Stewart, “just because he’s a politician.”

Both Charlamagne and Smith ruled out the possibility of former Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic Party’s 2028 presidential nominee. Charlamagne said Harris’s biggest opposition in a 2028 run would be “the Democratic Party,” adding that many did not want her to be the 2024 nominee.

Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) said Sunday that his party could advocate “commonsense solutions” to win back voters, including removing Trump’s tariffs as back-to-school season begins. Polis said he hasn’t spoken to Harris about another presidential run, and is currently not looking to run for president himself.
