Harris blasts SCOTUS for forgetting what ‘democracy and rule of law is supposed to be’
Former Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on Thursday night’s episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” to promote her upcoming book, 107 Days.
The tome is an account of Harris’s presidential campaign after Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential election. Stephen Colbert discussed the former vice president’s life after the campaign and described the contents of the book. It features a “behind the scenes” look at the former vice president’s campaign as well as insight into a wide array of political issues stemming from the campaign to the current political environment.
Colbert and Harris went beyond book topics during their nearly hourlong conversation, including offering their commentary on what Harris described as “capitulation” to President Donald Trump — a disappointing realization for her that she admitted she “did not see coming.” She then pivoted to insinuating that the Trump administration is usurping its authority, specifically citing its efforts to dissolve the Education Department.
“We designed our democracy with three independent coequal branches of government,” Harris said to Colbert. “When you see that the president of the United States is trying to get rid of the Department of Education, and Congress has the role and responsibility to stand in the way of that? And they’re just sitting on their hands, and then they go on recess because they don’t want to deal with transparency?”
“And the Supreme Court says that he could ignore the law that established it,” Colbert added.
“But the Supreme Court, we knew what they were doing,” Harris said.
“But the Supreme Court basically gave whoever would be president…immunity,” Harris added. “So, we’re not surprised what the Supreme Court is doing. And God, thank those members of the Court who write brilliant dissents and remind us of what the democracy and the rule of law is supposed to be.”
Earlier in the interview, Harris bemoaned the country’s current political atmosphere and called the system “broken.” She expressed disappointment that, in her opinion, the nation’s checks and balances were not working efficiently. It was one of the reasons she gave for her decision not to run for governor of California.
“Recently, I made the decision that, for now, I don’t want to go back in the system,” Harris said. “I think it’s broken. As fragile as our democracy is, our systems would be strong enough to defend our most fundamental principles. And I think right now that they’re not as strong as they need to be and…for now, I don’t want to go back in the system.”
“I want to travel the country, I want to listen to people, I want to talk with people, and I don’t want it to be transactional where I’m asking for their vote,” she added, to which the crowd applauded.

“To hear you say that it’s broken, to hear you say that our systems aren’t strong enough, is harrowing,” Colbert said.
“Well, but it’s also evident, isn’t it?” Harris asked.
