Tommy Tuberville renews call for Powell’s firing

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) continued to demand that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell be fired Wednesday, as Powell held interest rates steady.

Tuberville has been pushing for Powell’s removal nearly every day since June 19, writing, “Today is a good day to fire Jerome Powell” on Wednesday after Powell kept interest rates between 4.25% to 4.50%.

“FJP: FIRE JEROME POWELL,” Tuberville wrote in response to a Washington Examiner report on the federal interest rates.

Powell, 72, was nominated by President Donald Trump during his first term in 2018. His term expires in May 2026.

Former President Barack Obama nominated Powell to serve on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 2012.

However, Trump has opted not to fire Powell despite Tuberville’s complaints. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent insisted that the president made the decision himself after Trump blasted the Wall Street Journal on Truth Social for publishing another “typically untruthful story” that said Bessent recommended Trump not fire Powell.
