The Washington Examiner’s Joe Concha said Wednesday it is unlikely the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will hurt the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, saying it comes down to the economy’s well-being.
Republicans and Democrats seek to control the messaging of the “big, beautiful bill,” which President Donald Trump signed into law on July 4. The Republican Party wants to demonstrate to voters how it will aid the United States, whereas Democratic lawmakers are trying to paint the law in a negative light.
However, Concha said Republicans shouldn’t worry before the midterm elections, saying Obamacare didn’t poll well among the public either. He said that “in the end,” the economy’s “performance” will determine the mood of voters, not the bill itself.
“If things go well, if we see an economy that takes off where inflation remains below 3%, we have massive growth. Wages go up, unemployment stays down, and the stock market continues to do well, and that means everyone’s 401(k)’s are doing well, then I don’t know what Democrats run on, quite frankly, because ‘it’s always the economy, stupid,’ and that’s what’s going to decide 2026, not a bill passing in 2025,” Concha said on Fox News’s Fox & Friends First Wednesday.
Concha said Republicans have a “very strong platform” to promote in 2026 if the “big, beautiful bill” comes to fruition, combined with any economic benefits from Trump’s tariff deals.
Concha also criticized Sen. Cory Booker’s (D-NJ) “performance art” on the Senate floor Tuesday, in which the lawmaker feuded with fellow Democrats over passing bipartisan bills to boost local police forces. Concha said most people like “compromise” among lawmakers, and suggested Booker is opposed to “huge tax cuts” and decreased border crossings.
