Trump says Schiff should be prosecuted for mortgage fraud – Washington Examiner

Trump says Schiff should be prosecuted for mortgage fraud ‘like they tried to prosecute me’

President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric Sunday against longtime political foe Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) by calling for the lawmaker’s prosecution and alleging he committed mortgage fraud for reporting a home in Maryland as his primary residence from 2009 to 2020.

“Adam Schiff is a THIEF!” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “He should be prosecuted, just like they tried to prosecute me, and everyone else — The only difference is, WE WERE TOTALLY INNOCENT, IT WAS ALL A GIANT HOAX!”

Schiff’s office has defended the use of claiming year-round use of homes in California and Maryland as a “routine” practice for a member of Congress who frequently travels back and forth.

Schiff, who was an impeachment manager during Trump’s first Senate trial, has called the president’s attacks “baseless” and an attempt to distract from the conservative fallout over the administration’s handling of the Epstein files.

“Since I led his first impeachment, Trump has repeatedly called for me to be arrested for treason,” Schiff posted online. “So in a way, I guess this is a bit of a letdown. And this baseless attempt at political retribution won’t stop me from holding him accountable. Not by a long shot.”

In a subsequent post, Schiff continued, “This is just Donald Trump’s latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies. So it is not a surprise, only how weak this false allegation turns out to be. And much as Trump may hope, this smear will not distract from his Epstein files problem.”

A memorandum from investigators at Fannie Mae, the government-sponsored mortgage financier, to the Federal Housing Finance Agency, an independent agency that makes criminal referrals for mortgage fraud to the Justice Department, said Schiff and his wife “engaged in a sustained pattern of possible occupancy misrepresentation” on their home loans but had yet to make a final determination on illegal behavior, according to the Los Angeles Times
