Trump pushes Thune to cancel August recess to get remaining nominees confirmed – Washington Examiner

President Donald Trump urged Senate Majority leader John Thune to cancel the month-long august recess and other long weekends in order to expedite the confirmation of his remaining nominees, emphasizing their urgent need. Trump made this appeal via a post on Truth Social, highlighting the importance of confirming his judicial and other appointments, which have progressed more slowly compared to his first term. The Senate’s August recess was originally scheduled from August 4 to Labor Day, with additional recesses planned throughout the year. This call comes after a busy congressional period involving notable legislation and budgetary measures. Even though Trump’s first judicial nomination of his second term was recently confirmed, many vacancies still remain to be filled.

Trump pushes Thune to cancel August recess to get remaining nominees confirmed

President Donald Trump pressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to cancel the monthlong August recess, as well as other “long weekends,” in order to get the rest of his nominees confirmed.

Trump made the plea in a Truth Social post on Saturday evening, stressing that the nominees are needed “badly.”

“Hopefully the very talented John Thune, fresh off our many victories over the past two weeks and, indeed, 6 months, will cancel August recess (and long weekends!), in order to get my incredible nominees confirmed. We need them badly!!!” the president posted.

According to the Senate schedule for this year, the August recess was set to begin on Aug 4. and last up until Labor Day, or Sept. 1. Other recesses are scheduled throughout the rest of 2025 as well, mostly for holidays, but one recess scheduled for late September and another in early October do not include holidays.

SENATE CONFIRMS TRUMP’S FIRST JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT OF SECOND TERM

Trump’s call to scrap the August recess in particular follows a whirlwind period in both chambers of Congress over the past two months. This included the lengthy debate and eventual passage of the president’s “big, beautiful bill,” as well as a recission bill that included $9 billion in DOGE-inspired cuts and a series of cryptocurrency bills.

Despite the hectic schedule, the Senate also needs to confirm various nominations of Trump’s, particularly his judicial ones, which have come at a slower pace than his first term. The upper chamber confirmed Trump’s first judicial nomination this past Monday, but many vacancies remain.
