Jasmine Crockett accuses Trump of being ‘racist’ toward Liberian President

Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) criticized former President donald Trump for his remarks during a White House meeting with Liberian President Joseph Boakai and other African leaders. Trump praised Boakai’s English language skills and asked where he learned to speak English, despite English being the official language of Liberia. Some African leaders laughed at the comment. Crockett called Trump’s question “peak ignorance” and labeled it racist and offensive, arguing it was an embarrassing diplomatic misstep. In response, Massad Boulos, U.S.Senior Advisor for Africa, defended Trump, stating that the President was complimenting boakai’s language skills and emphasizing the positive relations between the U.S. and African nations under Trump. During the meeting, Boakai expressed support for American-led efforts to promote peace worldwide.

Jasmine Crockett accuses Trump of being ‘racist’ toward Liberian President

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) mocked President Donald Trump for asking Liberian President Joseph Boakai where he learned English.

Boakai joined the presidents of Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and Gabon in a Wednesday meeting at the White House, where Boakai addressed Trump in English and thanked him for “this opportunity” to meet.

“Such good English, that’s beautiful,” Trump responded. “Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?”

Some of the African leaders laughed. Trump continued his compliment.

“Where were you educated? In Liberia? Well, that’s very interesting. It’s beautiful English,” he continued. “I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well.”

“Very good, sir,” Boakai said.

While over 20 dialects are spoken in Liberia, English is the official language of the country. Crockett shared a clip of the interaction to point out this fact on X Wednesday.

“Trump never misses an opportunity to be racist and wrong, and every day he finds a new way to be embarrassing,” Crockett wrote. “Asking the President of Liberia where he learned English when it’s literally the official language is peak ignorance.”

“I’m pretty sure being blatantly offensive is not how you go about conducting diplomacy…,” Crockett added.

The Washington Examiner reached the White House for comment.

Massad Boulos, the U.S. Senior Advisor for Africa, took to X Thursday to defend Trump.

“The President actually complimented the language skills of the Liberian President,” Boulos wrote.

“I was in the meeting and everyone was deeply appreciative of the President’s time and effort. The continent of Africa has never had such a friend in the White House as they do in President Trump.”

During the meeting, Boakai pledged to “continue to support Americans in the strength to be able to bring about peace in the world,” and added, “because without peace, we cannot work together, and we stand with you with that.”
