Trump net approval hits lowest point of second term amid US strikes on Iran: Poll

President Donald Trump’s approval rating sank to the lowest levels of his second term following his decision to bomb nuclear targets in Iran and involve the United States further in Iran’s war with Israel, according to a new poll.

The Economist-YouGov poll found voters approved of Trump’s job performance 40% of the time, with 54% disapproving. Trump’s net approval rating is minus-14 with the survey, which was taken between Friday and Monday. The short U.S. bombing campaign against Iran was during that time.

The poll surveyed 1,590 U.S. adults and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Most Republicans approved of Trump bombing an Iranian nuclear facility, with Democrats largely against. Before the announcement of the bombing, 16% of Democrats and 34% of Republicans approved of bombing Iranian nuclear facilities. After, 5% of Democrats and 70% of Republicans approved.

Eleven percent of independents agreed with bombing the facilities before, and 25% did after. Trump’s handling of foreign policy also hit a new low, with a minus-14 net approval in that area.

The strike was carried out by U.S. B-2 bombers on Saturday and targeted several Iranian nuclear sites.

Trump characterized the operation as “successful” in a Truth Social post.

“We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan,” he wrote. “All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American Warriors. There is not another military in the World that could have done this. NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!”

He drew heavy criticism from within his own party for involving the U.S. in the conflict, which had been raging between Israel and Iran for over a week. Even Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a Trump ally, vehemently disagreed with the decision and worried about a further escalation.

“I got elected on the exact same campaign promises that President Trump got elected on,” Greene told CNN on Monday. “We promised no more foreign wars, no more regime change.”

“If this war were to continue, and we were to see, sadly, see American troops coming home with on flag-draped coffins, I think you would see Americans totally saying the same thing I’m saying, I hope that never happens again,” she said, adding, “I think President Trump has us on a path to peace.”

Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran on Monday, saying the conflict would be known as a “12 Day War.” The two sides appeared to break the agreement with last-second strikes against each other, with Trump angrily rebuking them.

“We basically — we have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f*** they’re doing,” Trump told reporters at the White House before a trip to The Hague for the NATO summit.
