DNC election for David Hogg’s successor heads to runoff vote
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is preparing for a runoff election to fill a second vice chair position, previously held by David Hogg, who opted not to run again following internal controversies. hogg had proposed a $20 million initiative aimed at replacing older Democrats with younger candidates, which caused friction within the party. In the initial voting, Shasti Conrad led with nearly 44% of the votes, followed by Kalyn Free with about 37% and Jeanna Repass with nearly 20%. Since no candidate secured a majority, a runoff between Conrad and Free is set to take place. The ongoing internal strife within the DNC has also been highlighted by the recent resignations of two union leaders, Randi weingarten and Lee Saunders, indicating broader tensions within the party regarding their strategy against the Trump administration and leadership direction.
DNC election for David Hogg’s successor heads to runoff vote
The Democratic National Committee‘s election to fill a second vice chair position after David Hogg decided not to run again for the position is headed to a runoff vote.
DNC members previously reelected Malcolm Kenyatta as vice chairman after the organization voted to redo the elections, in the aftermath of a challenge from an unsuccessful candidate in February.
Hogg opted not to seek the vice chairmanship, as it appeared he would be ousted from the position after he angered Democrats by launching a $20 million initiative to replace elderly Democrats with younger candidates in primary elections.
On Tuesday, DNC members failed to elect a second vice chair, with Shasti Conrad pulling nearly 44% of the vote, Kalyn Free receiving roughly 37% of the vote, and Jeanna Repass receiving nearly 20% of the vote.
Since no candidate received a majority of the votes cast, the race will head to a runoff between Conrad and Free on Wednesday, beginning at 10 a.m. ET. Voting will conclude on Friday at 5 p.m. ET.
The drama surrounding Hogg’s efforts to primary elderly Democrats is one of the recent internal DNC spats that have spilled out into the public. Shut out of power, Democrats have disagreed over how aggressive their tactics against President Donald Trump should be. Hogg has called for party senior members to step down from office to pave the way for a more combative and younger generation.
DNC Chairman Ken Martin lamented that Hogg’s antics have distracted from his ability to make his mark on the organization, in audio that leaked to Politico.
RANDI WEINGARTEN AND LEE SAUNDERS QUIT THE DNC IN LATEST UPHEAVAL
Adding to DNC struggles, this week, it was announced that two prominent labor union leaders and longtime DNC members, Randi Weingarten and Lee Saunders, quit the DNC, citing disagreements with Martin.
However, some DNC members told the Washington Examiner that the squabbling is the result of “bruised egos” and will not matter to the average American voter.
