Terry Moran claims journalists are ‘not to be objective’

Former ABC News correspondent Terry Moran stood by his rant against Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff for policy, insisting that his original comments against Miller were “accurate and true.”

Moran was suspended from his role as ABC News’s senior national correspondent after claiming that Miller is “a world-class hater” who “eats his hate,” with the network later deciding not to renew its contract with him. In reflecting on his departure, Moran claimed that his politics reflect that of a “Hubert Humphrey Democrat” in how he believes in accomplishing “practical things” in “a decent way.”

“So someone like Stephen Miller, in my judgement and in my observation, which is what reporters do, is degrading all of that, and is a danger, and that’s what was in my heart,” Moran told the Bulwark on Monday.

“And I would also say that this, while very hot, is an observation, a description, that is accurate and true,” Moran said of his original comments on Miller.

Moran also said that journalists do not give up their citizenship and that the job of a journalist is not to be “objective.” He added that there is no “Mount Olympus of objectivity” and that people must be “fair and accurate” when reporting the news.

The former ABC News commentator drew the rebuke of the Washington Examiner’s Joe Concha, who suggested that Moran’s claim that journalists are not meant to be objective is “absolutely and craptastically perfect.”

Moran’s interview with the Bulwark came on the same day as the 10-year anniversary of President Donald Trump announcing his candidacy in the 2016 presidential race. In looking back, Moran said he told his colleagues that Trump would win the election, partly due to what then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was saying she would do as president.

Following his ouster at ABC News, Moran announced his transition to working on a Substack newsletter, making him the latest journalist to join the platform. Other notable names on Substack include former CNN anchor Jim Acosta and former MSNBC host Joy Reid.
