Israeli death toll climbs to 13 in Iranian missile strikes as IDF targets defense HQ in Tehran – Washington Examiner

The article discusses the escalation of hostilities between Israel and iran, resulting in notable casualties. As of now, at least 13 Israelis have died in the conflict that began with an Israeli attack on iranian nuclear and military capabilities. Iranian missile strikes on Israel have claimed at least 10 lives. The Israeli Defense Forces retaliated by targeting around 80 sites connected to Iran’s energy and defense infrastructure. President Trump stated that the U.S. had no involvement in these attacks and urged for a negotiated resolution between Iran and Israel.

The conflict intensified following a U.N. resolution declaring Iran noncompliant with nuclear safeguards, prompting Israel to initiate a military operation designed to diminish the Iranian threat. Iran’s retaliation included missile strikes on civilian areas in Israel, causing numerous deaths and injuries. Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz, have threatened severe consequences against Iran for its attacks and emphasized the existential nature of the threat posed by Iran’s potential nuclear capabilities.

the ongoing exchanges of missile fire between the two nations suggest a troubling escalation in regional tensions, with prospects for diplomatic resolution appearing increasingly bleak.

At least 13 Israelis have now died in the hostilities between the Jewish state and Iran that began last week.

Iranian strikes carried out overnight against Israel took at least 10 lives, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service.

The fatalities come as the two countries have exchanged a barrage of missiles and attacks over the past three days, with the Israel Defense Forces carrying out overnight strikes on 80 targets focused on wiping out Tehran’s energy and defense infrastructure on Saturday, with Iran’s U.N. ambassador saying 78 Iranians had been killed in Israeli strikes.

President Donald Trump said in response to the latest exchange that the United States had not helped Israel carry out the attacks and urged Iran to come back to the negotiating table to sign a nuclear agreement that would avoid further destruction.

“The U.S. had nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight. If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before. However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!” the president said in a post to Truth Social.

The conflict began Thursday when Israel conducted a wide-ranging attack on Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities hours after the United Nations’s nuclear watchdog passed a resolution declaring Tehran in noncompliance with its nuclear safeguards obligations for the first time in two decades. The operation killed much of Iran’s military command and its leading nuclear scientists, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s entire air force command.

“Operation Rising Lion,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, seeks to “roll back the Iranian threat to Israel’s very survival.”

Iran responded by sending a barrage of missiles into Israeli territory, some of which struck a four-story building over the weekend, resulting in four deaths and 24 injuries in the northern district of Israel.

Another one of Tehran’s strikes hit a residential apartment building in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv, killing at least six people, including two children.

“Iran will pay a very heavy price for deliberately murdering our citizens, women and children. We will also achieve our objectives and we will also strike them forcefully. They will feel the might of our arm,” Netanyahu said in response to the attacks.

“We are here because we are in an existential campaign, which is clear today to all citizens of Israel. Think of what could happen if Iran had atomic weapons to drop on Israeli cities. Think of what could happen if Iran had 20,000 such missiles,” the Israeli prime minister added.

Tehran’s strikes led Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz to warn the regime on Saturday that if attacks on Israel, largely in civilian areas, aren’t halted, “Tehran will burn.” Israel followed up on the threat with attacks on two of Iran’s critical oil production facilities.

As Israel’s most powerful ally, the U.S. has tried for years to mediate an end to Iran’s nuclear program. Trump sought to solve the conflict via diplomatic means and in early April offered Iran 60 days to make a deal or else face “dire consequences.”

That deadline came and went unmet on the day before Israel decided to attempt to wipe out Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities on its own.

Tehran subsequently withdrew from talks with the U.S. and canceled a scheduled Sunday meeting between the country’s top negotiators.
