Marsha Blackburn slams Nashville mayor for being on wrong side of immigration debate

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) called out Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell for doing the opposite of “what the American people overwhelmingly voted for” regarding illegal immigration.

O’Connell has publicly opposed Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in his city despite the fact that the agency is cooperating with local law enforcement to arrest illegal immigrants with criminal records and gang affiliations. According to Blackburn, immigration is “one of those issues that is a 90% issue with the American people.”

“President Donald Trump is doing exactly what he promised to do and exactly what the American people overwhelmingly voted for, which is to close the border, get it under control, get all of these criminals locked up, get them off the streets, and make America safe again. It is happening under Donald J. Trump and these elected officials that are obstructing, like our mayor in Nashville, who is obstructing; they need to realize people want criminals off the streets and locked up,” Blackburn said Tuesday on Fox News’s The Faulkner Focus.

Blackburn introduced legislation that would reduce the holding period illegal immigrants undergo following their arrests from 90 days to 15 days. Another bill she proposed includes putting federal law enforcement on the “Covered Persons List” after they’ve been doxxed for additional protection and making it a federal crime for those who make the agents’ information public.

“I did this in response to our Nashville mayor actually siding with criminals,” Blackburn explained.

Meanwhile, O’Connell is facing a congressional investigation to determine whether he was involved in “aiding and abetting illegal immigration.” The mayor largely dismissed the allegations, saying, “I don’t have any reason to be concerned.”
