Paul compares Congress to ‘drunken teenagers’ needing oversight – Washington Examiner
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is vocal in his opposition to raising the debt ceiling as Congress prepares to vote on the “Big Lovely Bill Act.” He argues that the bill, which proposes approximately $400 billion in tax cuts, does not adequately address the issues of increasing goverment debt. Paul’s primary concern is that the proposed spending cuts are insufficient, predicting that the deficit will exceed $2 trillion in the coming year while Congress seeks to extend their credit line to an additional $5 trillion. He compares Congress’s fiscal responsibility to that of “drunken teenagers” and has suggested an amendment to limit debt ceiling increases to every three months. Despite ongoing pressure from figures like former President donald trump, who criticized him for his constant opposition without offering constructive solutions, Paul remains steadfast in his stance against the current legislation.
Paul says reconciliation bill should be split up to rein in Congress debt expansion
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) continued to object to raising the debt ceiling for government spending as his chamber is about to vote on the Big Beautiful Bill Act, calling for Congress to reign in its debt expansion.
Paul is not the only critic of the spending and tax legislation. The bill has come under scrutiny from Republican senators for costing some $400 billion in tax cuts. Paul appeared on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo to detail his objections, which do not include the tax cuts since he supports them.
“The spending cuts are not nearly enough. The other way to look at that is ask, year to year will we spend more money next year than last year? The answer is gonna be yes. Will the deficit be over $2 trillion next year? The answer is yes. This is why my big objection to the bill is they want to ask us to expand their credit line to $5 trillion,” Paul said.
“So, if your teenager at 16, you gave them a credit card and they maxed it out on booze and gambling and they were $2,000 in debt and they said, ‘Well, Mom, Dad, I want more credit.’ Would you give them more credit?” the senator continued. “Congress is like drunken teenagers. They’re terrible with money.”
Paul attempted to add his own amendment that would only raise the debt ceiling every three months.
TRUMP’S CRITICISM OF RAND PAUL IS WRONG AND MISGUIDED
Paul continues to hold strong to his stance despite pressure from President Donald Trump. In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed, “Rand votes NO on everything, but never has any practical or constructive ideas.”
The Kentucky senator has said he does “want to vote for it.” However, Paul has also suggested he knows of four Republican senators prepared to vote against the “big, beautiful bill.”
