John Kennedy says Supreme Court must address judges interfering with Trump’s power
Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) warned judges seeking to interfere with President Donald Trump would have their opposition taken to the Supreme Court, suggesting that the judicial branch will soon “dig up more snakes than they can kill.”
The Trump administration hit another legal speed bump on Wednesday night when the U.S. Court of International Trade struck down Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, which the administration quickly appealed. Reacting to the court’s decision, Kennedy joked that he was “shocked” that federal judges interfered with Trump and Congress’s power to make legislation, saying such a scenario had not happened “since yesterday.”
Kennedy then shared his belief that the executive branch has the power to implement tariffs since “Congress gave it to him.” He added that it is debatable whether this was a “prudent” move by Congress, but it should not be up for debate whether or not Trump can exercise this power.
“Well, sooner or later, the Supreme Court is going to have to address this,” Kennedy said on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle Wednesday. “Those who oppose the executive branch and those who oppose the legislative branch and are seeking recourse in the courts are at some point going to dig up more snakes than they can kill.”
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE COURT OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND ITS RULING AGAINST TRUMP’S TARIFF POLICIES
The Court of International Trade’s decision came down from three judges, one appointed by Trump and one each from former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama. The White House was highly critical of the decision from the “unelected judges.”
Amid the administration’s trade feud with other countries, the Trump administration has reportedly asked companies in the United States to stop selling software used to design semiconductors in China. This comes after the U.S. and China reached a temporary de-escalation in their trade war, which is set to last 90 days as of mid-May.
