Disney executives ask The View hosts to tone down political rhetoric

Disney executives have reportedly urged the hosts of ABC’s talk show *The View* to reduce their political commentary, especially considering President Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration. CEO Bob Iger and ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic met with the hosts to discuss the show’s heavy focus on politics and suggested they broaden their discussions beyond criticism of Trump, citing past episodes that garnered high ratings without a political theme. However, the show’s hosts, including Joy Behar and Ana Navarro, pushed back against these recommendations, asserting that their audience values their political insights. Despite this resistance, the executives maintained their position, with Iger insisting on a toned-down approach while the hosts decided to continue their current format. Tensions regarding the show’s content were also apparent during a recent Disney presentation for advertisers.

Disney executives ask The View hosts to tone down political rhetoric

Network executives reportedly asked the hosts of ABC’s The View to tone down their political content on the show ahead of President Donald Trump‘s inauguration in January.

Disney CEO Bob Iger wanted the talk show hosts to tame their political opinions and discussions. According to the Daily Beast, Iger and ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic requested that hosts Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and Ana Navarro pivot away from their constant criticism of Trump. ABC Network is Disney’s parent company.

Karamehmedovic met with the hosts and the show’s executive producer, Brian Teta, to discuss the program’s content and consistent focus on politics, particularly Trump. He suggested that they expand their horizons in their discussions and move beyond just politics, the outlet reported. To prove his point, Karamehmedovic highlighted previous episodes of the show that didn’t focus on politics or Trump but still generated high ratings.

The idea reportedly did not sit well with the show’s left-wing talk show hosts.

They pushed back against the recommendations, insisting that the show’s audience wants to hear their viewpoints. Navarro said the show’s viewers agree with their commentary and align with their ideals, so it would be odd if they failed to continue to provide insight and opinions on political matters, according to the outlet.

“This is what our audience wants,” one of the hosts reportedly said. “Isn’t it gonna look kind of bad if we’re all of a sudden not talking about politics?”

The hosts eventually decided to ignore the executives’ suggestions and reportedly said “they were just going to keep doing their thing,” according to the outlet.

Tensions surrounding the show’s content persisted last week when Disney held its Upfront presentation for advertisers. Navarro reportedly spoke to Iger about his suggestion. The exchange was friendly, according to the outlet, which reported that Navarro expressed gratitude to Iger for allowing the hosts to continue discussing politics.

Still, according to the outlet, Iger insisted the show should “tone down” its political rhetoric.
