Alice Marie Johnson, who was appointed as President Donald Trump’s pardon czar, recently reflected on her transformative journey from prison to teh White House. After serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense, Johnson received a pardon from Trump, which she describes as a second chance that has empowered her to help others in similar situations. She has submitted more than 100 clemency recommendations to the White House, resulting in over 46 individuals receiving pardons. During her time as pardon czar, Johnson aims to advocate for justice system reforms and to identify those who have served their time and deserve another chance, emphasizing that the U.S. is a nation that strives for progress despite it’s flaws.

President Donald Trump’s pardon czar Alice Marie Johnson reflected on the “full-circle journey” she has undergone in life, which has now put her in a position to offer others the same second chance that she received.
Johnson was appointed by Trump to work as the administration’s pardon czar, stating that he would be listening to her recommendations on who she believes ought to receive presidential pardons. Johnson previously received a pardon from Trump during his first term in office, pointing out how she has gone “from prison house to the White House” over the course of seven years.
“And so the president has entrusted me with this mission to help him find those people who deserve this second chance, who are similarly situated, not just like me, but who have served enough time, who have paid their debt to society,” Johnson explained on Fox News’s My View with Lara Trump. “Plus, there are those who have been, I’m going to say the victims of lawfare, the same way our president was.”
Trump pardoned Johnson in 2020 after commuting her life sentence for a first-time, nonviolent drug offense, describing her original sentence amount as “unbelievable.” Upon receiving a pardon from the president, she said she felt as if her life was “starting all over again.”
Johnson said she has sent “over 100” clemency and pardon recommendations to the White House, of which over 46 were given a second chance.
While reflecting on her journey of becoming pardon czar, Johnson contended that she represents “what America is about” — the ability to come back “stronger” from the mistakes people make in life. She suggested the country itself is “an imperfect nation striving for excellence.”

“Only someone like President Trump could make my story possible,” Johnson stated. “We needed someone right at that moment, and this time we’re in now, who has the courage to make right decisions, and there’s so many others who are serving long, unnecessary sentences, who pose no safety risk and who have rehabilitated, who deserve their second chance.”
Detailing a desire to also address justice system reform over the next four years, Johnson stated that she will be advocating for laws that “need to be changed,” suggesting, “I’m not going to be able to find everyone” who deserves a pardon. She contended that “no one” is safe when combating a “corrupt system.”
