Johnson eyes GOP victories in 2026 as Democrats are ‘in total disarray’ – Washington Examiner

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed optimism about the Republican PartyS potential to expand its majority in Congress during the upcoming 2026 elections. He emphasized the importance of party unity in advancing key legislation and noted his collaboration with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) on notable initiatives.

Currently, Republicans hold a slim majority with 220-213 in the House and 53-45 in the Senate. Johnson highlighted the rarity of House and Senate Republicans working seamlessly together, which he believes is crucial for capitalizing on their small margins. He also pointed out the current challenges faced by the Democratic Party, characterizing them as “in total disarray” and lacking clear leadership or a cohesive agenda.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) predicted Republicans can grow their majority in Congress in the 2026 elections, while also noting the immediate importance of his party being unified regarding reconciliation legislation.

While Republicans have a slim majority in the House of Representatives at 220-213 and in the Senate at 53-45, Johnson said he is working closely with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to push through “big consequential legislation.”

“House and Senate Republicans working together seamlessly as a team — that’s a real innovation, that hasn’t happened very often in history. We know that that’s important because the margins are small,” Johnson told My View with Lara Trump. “So, we stay unified and go into the midterm election, we can grow the majority in the House and the Senate, and my focus is the House, of course.”

“There’s only two times in the last 90 years that a sitting president has picked up seats for his party in that first cycle after he’s elected,” he added. “Donald Trump is going to make history in this way, and we are as well.”

Johnson also pointed to the Democrats as “being in no mood” to work in bipartisan fashion on legislation.

“Their party is in total disarray,” Johnson said of the Democratic Party. “They’re having an internal civil war right now. They have no identifiable leader. Their entire agenda has been totally repudiated by the American people. And so, they don’t really know here to turn. All they can do is ‘fight, fight back,’”
