“No longer will we tolerate these Serial Offenders who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets. That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders,” Trump said.

He added that the reopening of the Alcatraz prison will be a “symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE,” as the country “will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals, who came into our Country illegally.”

The famous federal prison on Alcatraz Island, which housed well-known criminals such as Al Capone and George “Machine-Gun” Kelly, has been closed since 1963. It was known for its extreme seclusion, as it sits atop an island over 1 mile from the coast of San Francisco. During its nearly 30 years of operation, no one has been recorded as having successfully escaped from Alcatraz, despite numerous attempts by prisoners.

The closure of the prison was attributed to the expensive costs of maintaining it, with steep daily operating costs compared to other federal prisons, along with millions of dollars needed for renovations and upkeep. The island remains a popular tourist destination and is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which is a national park.
