The decision by Democrats to cancel the Florida primary in support of Biden ended up benefiting Republicans, leading to the flipping of local seats
Florida Democrats’ Decision Backfires: Impact on Local Races
Florida Democrats opted to award President Joe Biden the state’s delegates in November, bypassing a primary vote, possibly to shield the unpopular incumbent. However, this strategy seemed to have adverse effects, leading to losses in local elections for Democrats.
Party leaders handed Biden the state’s 224 delegates months in advance, canceling the primary. Biden’s Democrat challengers criticized this move as intentional disenfranchisement, aimed at helping the incumbent. The absence of a statewide Democrat primary resulted in lower turnout among registered Democrats compared to Republicans who strongly supported former President Donald Trump in the primary.
Several key wins by Republicans highlighted the negative impact of the Democratic Party’s decision. Republican-backed candidates secured victories, flipping seats in their favor. For instance, Bruce Rector won Clearwater’s nonpartisan mayoral race, Michael Mannino and Ryan Cotton snatched City Council seats, defeating Democratic incumbents.
Success for Republican Candidates
- Bruce Rector’s victory in Clearwater
- Republican Shane Taylor winning the Oakland mayoral race in Orange County
- Republican Nick Nesta retaining his position as Apopka City Commissioner
The Tampa Bay Times attributed these wins to a significant conservative turnout, emphasizing the appeal of Republican candidates in these local races.
It was not just Clearwater and Orange County that saw a wave of Republican victories. In Delray Beach, former mayor Tom Carney successfully flipped the mayor seat. The win over incumbent Shirley Johnson, who championed diversity and equity, showcases a shift towards more conservative choices in the area where Biden had previously dominated.

Efforts by failed gubernatorial candidate and Florida Democratic Party chairwoman Nikki Fried to boost local Democrat-friendly candidates faced challenges. Only four out of seven candidates she endorsed emerged victorious, with two winning by narrow margins.
George Oliver, a Democrat-backed candidate, won a seat on the Ocoee City Commission by a slim margin. His pro-life challenger benefited from Republicans’ active involvement in the statewide primary, where Democrats were absent, reflecting a trend in favor of conservative choices.
As the local elections unfolded, it became evident that the Democratic Party’s decision to forgo a primary vote in support of Biden had repercussions. Democrat losses in local races highlighted the importance of voter engagement and the impact of strategic decisions on election outcomes.
Despite efforts to elevate Democrat-friendly candidates, the fallout from canceling the primary resonated in the results, showcasing a significant impact on the political landscape at the local level.
