Suspected Terrorist on Watchlist Detained for Shooting at a Business
Chaos Unfolds as Armed Suspect Clashes with Law Enforcement in North Carolina
In a startling incident last week, Awet Hagos, 32, found himself at the center of an intense standoff with law enforcement officers in North Carolina, following his alleged shooting spree at a local business.
Multiple Charges Filed Against Combative Suspect
Now facing serious charges in Gates County, Hagos is accused of three counts of assault on a government official, similar counts for resisting a public officer, and carrying a concealed weapon. With investigations underway, additional charges loom over the horizon.
Dramatic Encounter at the Quick Stop
It was a scene of high tension at a Quick Stop convenience store, as detailed by The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald, when Hagos was found unleashing firearm rounds. Confronting the suspect, deputies encountered fierce resistance, their tasers proving ineffective against Hagos’s onslaught.
The chaos escalated when Hagos reportedly attempted to seize a deputy’s rifle and retreated to a camper, initiating a prolonged barricade situation.
“Upon arrival, the deputies and a Trooper with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol attempted to take the suspect into custody,” recounted Gates County Sheriff Ray Campbell. “The suspect became extremely combative and attempted to disarm a deputy of their firearm. The suspect then fled into a small camper located adjacent to the business.”
Terror Watchlist and Immigration Complications
Adding to the gravity of the situation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) notified local authorities that Hagos is listed in the Terrorist Screening Dataset (TSDS), amplifying concerns due to his inclusion on the terrorist “watchlist”.
Background reports by WAVY TV 10 shed light on Hagos’s travels, revealing origins from “an area of Africa near the Yemen border” and prior residency in Haiti. His most recent base was in California, notably recognized as a sanctuary state.
Currently held on a $100,000 bond at the Albemarle District Jail, Hagos now faces an ICE detainer request. This development signifies that he may be illegally present in the U.S. and subject to deportation by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).
