Golden Globes ratings surge after 2020 slump
The Golden Globes Sees Ratings Spike, but Viewers Want Ricky Gervais Back
The Golden Globes experienced a much-needed boost in ratings this year, with a 50 percent increase in viewership compared to last year’s dismal numbers. The move to the CBS network and a lead-in from the NFL helped attract an average of 9.4 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This is a significant improvement from the 6.25 million viewers who tuned in last year on NBC, which marked the second-smallest audience in the network’s history of broadcasting the awards show.
ngl i never found Jo Koy funny and what he said at the golden globe was actually why the barbie movie was made, because of sexist comments like those. It has come out that even the cast hated the joke and I understand why, never hand this man a mic again. pic.twitter.com/qV8aiFb2Ij

Last year’s show barely surpassed the worst-rated televised event in 2008, which was a press conference held during a writers strike. However, the NFL lead-in of the Buffalo Bills beating the Miami Dolphins 21-14 helped boost the ratings for the awards show, as noted by THR.
While CBS may be celebrating the higher ratings, it’s important to note that they are still far below the pre-pandemic viewership levels. In previous years, the Golden Globes averaged nearly 19 million viewers between 2008 and 2019, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Despite the improvement in ratings, viewers took to social media to express their disappointment with the 2024 host, Jo Koy. His comments during the show fell flat with both the performers in the room and viewers at home.
Koy responded to the criticism and backlash, acknowledging that it was a tough gig and a challenging room. He explained that hosting is a different style from stand-up comedy and admitted that he took a writers’ approach to his monologue. Despite the negative feedback, Koy still expressed his love for what he did.

Despite the increase in ratings, many viewers voiced their disappointment in the absence of Ricky Gervais as the host. Gervais, who hosted the Golden Globes from 2010 to 2020, became known for his controversial and humorous monologues that often targeted celebrities and the entertainment industry as a whole.
Gervais’ sharp wit and fearless commentary made him a fan favorite, and many felt that his absence was noticeable. Social media platforms were flooded with comments and memes expressing the desire for Gervais to return as the host of the Golden Globes.
One Twitter user expressed their disappointment, stating, ”The #GoldenGlobes just aren’t the same without Ricky Gervais. Bring back the savagery!” Another user added, “I miss Ricky Gervais roasting everyone. The show feels a bit dull without him.”
Gervais himself has also made it clear that he would be open to hosting the Golden Globes again. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he stated, “I love doing those shows. I had a blast. I never thought I’d do it four times. I had four years off and now I’ve done it four times. But you never know.”
The organizers of the Golden Globes have not responded to the viewers’ requests for Gervais’ return. However, given the significant increase in ratings this year, it is possible that they may consider bringing him back in the future to maintain or improve viewership.
In the meantime, the Golden Globes will continue to search for a host who can capture the same level of excitement and entertainment that Gervais brought to the stage. The pressure will be on for the next host to live up to the expectations set by Gervais and to keep viewers engaged throughout the show.
Overall, while the Golden Globes may have seen a spike in ratings this year, it is clear that many viewers still long for the presence of Ricky Gervais as the host. Only time will tell if their desires will be fulfilled in future award ceremonies.
