The Capture of the Murder Suspect in Florida Mall Shooting
After nearly two weeks, the murder suspect involved in the deadly shooting at a Florida mall has finally been apprehended.
Authorities announced the arrest of 39-year-old Albert J. Shell Jr. on Monday morning.
The shooting took place inside the Paddock Mall, just two days before Christmas.
40-year-old David Barron lost his life in the shooting, while a woman sustained injuries.
Investigators suspect that the attack was targeted.
“We know the victim had a prior relationship with Mr. Shell,” Chief Mike Balken of the Ocala Police Department said during a press conference. “There’s no reason to believe that this was anything other than a beef between two individuals that was resolved in a mall with a gun.”
Shell was located at a home about 20 miles southwest of Ocala, in an area known as the Florida highlands, around 1 AM on Monday morning.
After two hours of negotiation, he surrendered to the surrounding officers.
Authorities had offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to Shell’s arrest.
Chief Balken expressed gratitude for the over 100 tips received and confirmed that the reward would be paid out.
“His criminal history alone tells me that he should never have been on the street to have been able to commit this crime,” Balken said. “We’re going to see to it that he spends the rest of his life behind bars.”
Shell now faces charges of premeditated first-degree murder for Barron’s killing, as well as attempted first-degree murder.
