Israeli president avoids taking a stance on Netanyahu’s future as prime minister
Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Netanyahu’s Future
Israeli President Isaac Herzog sidestepped a question on whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should remain in power, amid polls showing less confidence in Netanyahu.
A recent poll from the Israel Democracy Institute revealed that a staggering 85% of Israelis desire a new prime minister to lead the country. However, Herzog, emphasizing his role as the head of state, refrained from taking sides in the political arena. During an appearance on NBC News’s Meet the Press, he urged the public to shift their focus towards the ongoing war in Gaza against Hamas.
Herzog’s Stance as President
“As the head of state of Israel, I’m not directly involved in the political arena by taking sides. I’m not in charge of the executive, but I do represent the national spirit of Israel from my capacity as president of Israel. I’m sure that the prime minister will relate to it, undoubtfully, but it is one of the items in the national debate on so many topics because we are a democracy. But we are focused, really focused on bringing about change in the region,” Herzog said.
While discussing the ongoing conflict, Herzog emphasized the importance of eliminating Hamas terrorists and allowing the people of Gaza to live in peace. He expressed pride in the ability of Israeli society to engage in free and open debates, even during times of war.
“We are at war, we are united, and we are committed to change this equation, and as such, while committed to changing this equation, while grieving, while worrying about the hostages, we also have debate within Israeli society — and it is very worthy — I am proud that we can hold a free and open debate on every topic that matters to our lives,” he added.
President Joe Biden, who shares a longstanding relationship with Netanyahu, acknowledged the growing opposition to the war in Gaza. Biden emphasized the need for Netanyahu to adapt to this changing sentiment, while reiterating the United States’ support for Israel in its fight against Hamas.

Why did Israeli President Isaac Herzog choose not to express a clear stance on Netanyahu’s future in power?
Ecent poll in Israel has revealed decreasing confidence in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As the nation grapples with political uncertainty, Israeli President Isaac Herzog was recently asked about Netanyahu’s future in power. However, Herzog chose to sidestep the question, refraining from expressing a clear stance.
The long-standing leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu has been the subject of much debate and controversy in recent years. As the longest-serving prime minister in Israeli history, Netanyahu has navigated through various political challenges and has been a significant figure on the global stage. However, his premiership has not been without criticism, with opponents accusing him of corruption and other misconduct.
The latest poll conducted by respected Israeli research institutes suggests that confidence in Netanyahu’s leadership is waning. The poll revealed that a majority of Israelis have lost faith in their prime minister’s ability to effectively govern the country. In light of these findings, the question of Netanyahu’s future has naturally emerged.
During a recent address, President Isaac Herzog, whose role is largely ceremonial but still holds significant weight in Israeli politics, was asked about his opinion on whether Netanyahu should remain in power. Herzog, known for his diplomatic rhetoric and measured approach to politics, chose not to provide a direct answer to the question. Instead, he skillfully sidestepped the issue, possibly to avoid further controversy or political ramifications.
Herzog’s reluctance to take a firm stance on Netanyahu’s future is understandable, considering the intricate political landscape of Israel. The country often witnesses fragmented governments, frequent elections, and fragile coalitions. In such a volatile atmosphere, the president’s neutrality may be seen as a gesture of maintaining stability and non-partisanship.
Moreover, President Herzog’s pragmatic approach may also be reflective of his desire to foster unity among the Israeli people. With an already polarized society, taking sides on such a sensitive issue could potentially deepen the divisions within the nation. Instead, Herzog may be striving to promote reconciliation and bridge the gaps that exist among different political factions.
Nonetheless, Herzog’s refusal to comment on Netanyahu’s future has sparked speculation and debate among political commentators and analysts. Some interpret it as a sign of disapproval or lack of confidence in the current prime minister, while others interpret it as a diplomatic gesture to avoid causing unrest. Regardless of Herzog’s intentions, his statement (or lack thereof) has generated significant interest and discussion.
As the Israeli political landscape continues to evolve, the question of Netanyahu’s future remains unanswered. The upcoming months and years will undoubtedly witness twists and turns in the country’s political scene, potentially leading to a change in leadership. Until then, Isaac Herzog’s decision to sidestep the question has only fueled further speculation and curiosity about the future of Israeli politics and the fate of Benjamin Netanyahu.
