Drag Racing Legend Don Schumacher Passes Away at 79
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don Schumacher, a true icon in NHRA Drag Racing and motorsports. The legendary drag racer-turned-team owner lost his battle with lung cancer on Wednesday, leaving behind an incredible legacy that will be felt forever.
During his career, Schumacher dominated the Funny Car, playing a pivotal role in establishing its own NHRA class. With five wins under his belt, he retired in 1974, only to return over two decades later to create his own racing team alongside his son Tony Schumacher. Schumacher Racing has since become the most successful team in NHRA history.
A Driven Force in Racing
“If I had to describe Don in one word, it would be ‘driven.’ He approached everything he was passionate about with unwavering determination, whether it was family, business, racing, or even fishing,” said NHRA announcer Alan Reinhart. “Not only was he a fierce competitor, but he also worked tirelessly to ensure the sport thrived. Don’s influence on the track, in terms of safety, technology, and excellence, cannot be overstated. He was a true champion.”
Don Schumacher’s impact extended far beyond the racing world. In addition to his achievements on the track, he founded Schumacher Electric, a company that produces a wide range of battery chargers, testers, maintainers, jump starters, portable power solutions, and electric vehicle charging equipment.
The NHRA President, Glen Cromwell, expressed his condolences, stating, “Don’s passion for racing, commitment to safety, and remarkable achievements as both a driver and team owner will forever be remembered. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends, family, and everyone at Don Schumacher Racing.”
Don Schumacher’s family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he received treatment. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
