Hamas kills 4 Israelis, including pregnant woman. ABC News features image of released Palestinian prisoners
ABC News Uses Misleading Photo in Report on Hamas Terror Attack
After four Israelis — including a 24-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child — were murdered by Hamas terrorists in a shooting at a Jerusalem bus stop Thursday, ABC News reported on the story using a picture of recently freed Palestinian prisoners as its main photo.
At around 7:40 a.m. local time, two Palestinian brothers jumped out of a vehicle at the bus stop near a main entrance to the capital city and fired at the people waiting for the bus, killing four and wounding at least six others. Shortly after the shooting, Hamas claimed responsibility for the terror attack, calling the terrorists “jihad-waging martyrs.”
ABC News’s report on the story featured a photo of people who were crying and embracing — except the photo was not of grieving Israelis but of Palestinian prisoners who were recently freed in exchange for hostages held by terrorists.

The ABC News report went on to refer to Hamas as a “Palestinian militant group,” even though Hamas has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government since 1997. The article then said the terrorist attack “occurred amid surging violence between Israeli settlers and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank while Israel is at war with Hamas” without any mention of the temporary ceasefire agreed upon by Hamas leaders and then violated by the terrorists multiple times this week.

In Thursday’s attack at the Jerusalem bus stop, 24-year-old Livia Dickman, who was pregnant with her first child, was declared dead at the scene. Ashdod rabbinical judge Elimelech Wasserman, 73, and Hannah Ifergan, a woman in her 60s, were later declared dead at the hospital.
Horrible. One of the victims of today’s shooting attack in Jerusalem was a young woman Liba Dikman, who was pregnant with her first child.

Surveillance footage showed the two Hamas members jump out of their vehicle and immediately start shooting into the crowd at the bus stop. Within seconds, three people surround the terrorists and return fire, killing them at the scene. The terrorists used an M-16 rifle and a handgun, and police found a large amount of ammunition when they searched the brothers’ vehicle, according to The Times of Israel.
The older brother was jailed from 2010 to 2020 for planning attacks in coordination with terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip, and the younger brother was jailed in 2014 for undisclosed terror activity, the Shin Bet security agency said.
How does the framing of the incident as a result of ongoing conflict in neighboring Gaza rather than a deliberate act of terrorism by Hamas impact the perception of the attack?
S in neighboring Gaza.” This framing of the incident implies that the attack was a result of ongoing conflict rather than a deliberate act of terrorism by Hamas.
The use of a misleading photo in the report is highly problematic. By featuring a picture of recently freed Palestinian prisoners, ABC News creates a false narrative that suggests the attackers were victims themselves. This not only misrepresents the reality of the situation but also trivializes the loss of innocent lives and the heinous nature of the terror attack.
Furthermore, referring to Hamas as a “Palestinian militant group” instead of a terrorist organization downplays the group’s violent and extremist ideology. Hamas is notorious for its use of suicide bombings, rocket attacks, and other forms of violence against Israeli civilians. By not accurately labeling Hamas as a terrorist organization, ABC News undermines the severity of their actions and the threat they pose to regional security.
It is the responsibility of reputable news organizations like ABC News to provide accurate and unbiased coverage of such incidents. By misrepresenting the events and using a misleading photo, ABC News has failed in its duty to report the truth. This type of biased reporting only serves to fuel misinformation and perpetuate a distorted view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
It is crucial that media outlets hold themselves to the highest standards of journalism, especially when reporting on matters as sensitive and complex as terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The public relies on these outlets for accurate and impartial information, and any form of misrepresentation or bias undermines the trust between the news organization and its audience.
In light of this incident, it is imperative that ABC News and other media organizations reflect on their reporting practices and strive for transparency, accuracy, and fairness. The use of misleading photos and biased language only serves to further exacerbate tensions and hinder efforts for peace and understanding in the region.
