In a post on their website, the NJEA states that candidates for teacher certification in New Jersey must pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test or show high scores on the SAT, ACT, or GRE. The union believes that this requirement is an unnecessary barrier to entering the teaching profession.

Nicki Neily, president of Parents Defending Education, disagrees with the union’s stance, stating that lowering standards is not the solution to recruiting qualified teachers.
Sean Spiller, president of the NJEA, has previously highlighted the challenges faced by teachers, including excessive paperwork and inadequate compensation. However, critics argue that eliminating the basic skills test would compromise the quality of education.
