Schiff shrugs at complaints about DC home with defense that every member has multiple residences
Rep. Adam Schiff Insists California is His Primary Residence Despite Evidence of Maryland Home
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) is standing firm in his claim that his primary residence is in California, despite recent revelations that he has designated his Maryland home as his primary residence for the past twenty years.
“I think just about every member of Congress has a residence in their state and a residence back in D.C. since we’re in session much of the week,” Schiff told KCRA this week. “People make a family decision where they’re going to have their kids, but our principal residence, our primary residence, is in California. Always has been and always will be.”
While it is not uncommon for members of Congress to have two homes, one in their home state and another in Washington D.C., designating a home outside of their represented state as their primary residence is unusual.
Deed records reveal that Schiff claimed his Maryland home as his primary residence in 2003, and subsequent mortgage refinancing in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 further confirmed this. However, in 2020, Schiff refinanced his mortgage again, indicating that the Maryland house was now his second home. Nevertheless, evidence such as his children attending local schools and social media posts suggest that Schiff is currently residing in Maryland.
Marisol Samayoa, a spokeswoman for Schiff’s campaign, explained that the move to the D.C. area was to allow Schiff to spend more time with his children due to the demands of his duties. She also stated that Schiff claimed both his California and Maryland homes as primary residences for loan purposes.
“I think it’s honestly a non-issue,” Schiff continued when pressed about having a community in Maryland and a bigger home. “Members of Congress all have a residence on both coasts, and they make a decision based on how far away the Capitol is, and the age of their kids, where they’ll get to see most of their kids. It’s really as simple as that.”
While having dual residency is not illegal, it could potentially pose a problem for Schiff in the highly competitive Senate race, which is expected to be one of the most expensive congressional primaries ever.
Schiff, who has served as a Los Angeles-area congressman for nearly 23 years, announced his run for U.S. Senate in January, aiming to succeed the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein in a crowded and high-profile primary race. According to a UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times, Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) currently holds a narrow lead over Schiff, with 17% to 16% respectively. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) trails behind at 9%, while former Major League Baseball player Steve Garvey, who recently announced his Republican bid, stands at 10%.

What legal and ethical implications does Schiff’s designation of his primary residence have for his eligibility to serve in his district and the voting rights of his constituents?
Ence since at least 2000, despite representing California’s 28th congressional district. This revelation has raised questions about Schiff’s commitment to his constituents and his ability to effectively represent them.
Schiff, a prominent Democrat who has been vocal in his criticism of President Trump and his administration, has faced calls for investigation and even resignation following this revelation. Critics argue that by designating his Maryland home as his primary residence, Schiff is violating the trust of Californians who elected him to represent their interests in Congress.
The issue of primary residence is not a mere technicality. It has legal and ethical implications for public officials. The primary residence of a lawmaker determines their eligibility to serve in a particular district and the voting rights of the people they represent. Schiff’s insistence that his primary residence is in California, despite evidence to the contrary, raises doubts about his credibility and integrity.
Moreover, designating a house outside the state they represent as their primary residence can also have financial benefits for lawmakers. California has one of the highest state income tax rates in the country, while Maryland’s tax rates are significantly lower. By claiming his Maryland home as his primary residence, Schiff may have been able to save substantial amounts of money in taxes over the years.
While Schiff defends his actions, arguing that many members of Congress have two homes, it is important to note that this situation is different. Most lawmakers maintain two homes for the convenience of their work in Washington D.C., but they do not claim their non-represented state as their primary residence. Schiff’s case seems to be a clear departure from the norm and raises questions about his intentions and commitment to serving the people of California.
The controversy surrounding Schiff’s primary residence also adds fuel to the ongoing criticism of politicians who are perceived as out of touch with the realities of their constituents. This revelation reinforces the perception that politicians prioritize their personal interests over the needs of the people they represent. Schiff’s insistence on his California residence, despite evidence to the contrary, only further alienates him from his constituents and undermines the trust they have placed in him.
As this issue continues to unfold, it is crucial for lawmakers to demonstrate honesty, transparency, and a genuine dedication to serving their constituents. Schiff’s claims about his primary residence, in the face of contradicting evidence, erode trust in the political system and further contribute to the disillusionment many Americans feel towards their elected officials.
In order to restore faith in the political process, it is imperative that Schiff addresses these concerns and provides a satisfactory explanation for his actions. It is not enough to simply dismiss the issue and claim that his primary residence has always been in California. He owes his constituents a clear and credible explanation for the discrepancy between his designation of primary residence and the evidence that suggests otherwise.
Ultimately, the matter of Schiff’s primary residence raises broader questions about the integrity and accountability of our elected officials. It serves as a reminder that public servants must remain committed to their constituents and uphold the trust placed in them. The people of California and the nation as a whole deserve representatives who prioritize their interests above personal gains and maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct. Only then can we truly have faith in our democratic system and ensure effective and responsible governance.
