South Australian authorities are on the hunt for the body of a missing surfer who is believed to have fallen victim to a great white shark.
Yesterday, South Australian police issued a statement regarding the search for a 55-year-old man who went missing while surfing near Granites Beach at around 10:20 a.m. A witness reported seeing a shark attack the man.
According to multiple witnesses, the man was among a group of about 12 surfers when the shark launched its attack.
“The shark grabbed him, pulled him back down, brought him back up, pulled him back down again,” the witness told the press.
Despite extensive air and water searches conducted by authorities and local volunteers, the man’s body has not yet been found. The search resumed this morning.
While officials have not disclosed the shark species responsible for the attack, surfer Jeff Schmucker, who witnessed the incident, claimed it was a 13-foot great white shark.
Schmucker also mentioned that he swam over to assist the injured surfer but only discovered the surfboard with a large bite mark.
Another witness, Ian Brophy, vividly described the moment he saw the predator and how it swiftly took the surfer underwater, leaving behind a trail of blood and the surfboard resurfacing.
“I saw him in the waves and the shark had his body in his mouth — it was pretty gruesome,” he continued. “Within a few minutes, there was no sign of the surfer’s body. It took every bit of him, I think.”
Police Superintendent Paul Bahr emphasized the need for surfers and water enthusiasts in the area to be aware of the risks.
