Netflix and Disney Lead ‌in LGBTQ Content​ Creation

Netflix⁣ and Disney are at ⁣the forefront of promoting LGBTQ representation in Hollywood films‌ for 2022, with an impressive 8% increase compared to ​the previous year.

GLAAD’s Annual‌ Studio Responsibility Index reveals that Disney and Netflix ‍surpassed‍ other major motion ‌picture studios in terms of releasing “LGBTQ-inclusive” content and woke films⁢ from January 1 to December 31, 2022.

GLAAD used “The Vito Russo Test” ‍to determine the⁤ inclusivity of ‌films. This test rates⁣ a film based on the following criteria:

  1. The ⁢film includes a character who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer.
  2. The ‍character is not solely defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity⁣ but possesses unique traits like straight/cisgender characters.
  3. The‍ LGBTQ character’s presence significantly impacts the​ plot, going beyond providing commentary ⁣or stereotypes.
  4. The LGBTQ character’s‌ story avoids⁤ offensive tropes or stereotypes and shows development. In films ‌with multiple LGBTQ​ characters, at least one character must meet this criterion.

According to the GLAAD⁢ study, Walt ‌Disney Studios and Netflix emerged as the leaders in promoting LGBTQ content among viewers.

Disney produced 24 out of‌ 59 ​movies‌ with LGBTQ content, making 41% of its films “inclusive.” This includes seven movies from Walt Disney Studios, five from Disney+, and 12‌ from ‍Hulu. GLAAD also noted that “Walt Disney‍ Studios included LGBTQ characters⁢ in​ all five of its Disney theatrical releases last year.”

Some of the films that passed the test include “Black ​Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Thor: Love and⁤ Thunder,” “Better Nate‍ Than Ever,” “Turning Red,” and more.

Disney was specifically mentioned for films like “Strange World” and “Lightyear,” which performed ​poorly at the⁤ box office. Additionally, Disney+ film “Zombies 3” received criticism for its⁤ LGBTQ stories ⁢aimed at ⁢children.

Netflix also contributed significantly to the woke⁤ agenda, producing 24⁣ “LGBTQ-inclusive⁤ films” out of 107 releases, meeting the​ LGBTQ criteria⁢ in 22% of its‌ films.

Some of the films that passed the test⁤ on Netflix include⁣ “Falling For Christmas,”‍ “Do Revenge,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,”⁤ “The Royal Treatment,” “Senior‍ Year,” and more. The‌ streaming site was also ‍recognized for its transgender hero​ boy film “Wendell & Wild,” which targeted kids.

The GLAAD report celebrates the 50% increase ⁤in LGBTQ films ⁣from Hollywood studios over the past decade, calling it a culture-shift that supports and accepts LGBTQ individuals.
